The Tsushima tube-nosed bat ( Murina tenebrosa ) is a possibly extinct bat species from the subfamily of the tube- nosed bat (Murininae). She is only known through an older female who was found on the Japanese island of Tsushima in 1962 .

features

The head-torso length of the holotype is 50.5 mm, the forearm length 34.4 mm and the ear length 16 mm. The fur is very soft, wavy, woolly and shiny. It consists of short and long hair. The back fur is dark brown with gray-yellow tips. The muzzle and the fore neck are brown. The hair on the underside is lighter than the dorsal fur hair; dark brown on the flanks and light yellowish brown on the belly. The surface of the flight membrane between the hind limbs (uropatagium) is almost hairless. The long, tubular nostrils protrude slightly outwards. They are shorter than the other Japanese tube-nosed bats taxa .

Habitat and way of life

The type specimen of the Tsushima tube-nosed bat was discovered in a cave. However, it is possible that this species also lived in tree hollows. It was dependent on large forests and fed on insects. No more is known about their way of life.

status

The IUCN lists the Tsushima tube-nosed bat in the critically endangered category with the addition of possibly extinct . The forest area on Tsushima has been severely cleared. Searches in caves and efforts to catch this bat with stretched Japanese nets have so far remained unsuccessful. A specimen found on Yakushima in 1919 , considered Murina ussuriensis by Glover Morrill Allen in 1920 , could represent this species.
