Tsutomu Yanagida (* 1949 ) is a Japanese physicist and university professor.

Life

Tsutomu Yanagida received his PhD from Hiroshima University in Japan in 1977 . In 1979 he developed the model of the Seesaw mechanism , which explains the light mass of neutrinos by introducing right-handed heavy neutrinos. A few years later, together with M. Fukugita, he developed the model of leptogenesis (also Fukugita-Yanagida scenario), which traces the baryon asymmetry back to a lepton asymmetry . Right-handed neutrinos are also used for this. Until 2019 he was professor at the Kavli Institute for Physics and Mathematics of the Universe at the University of Tokyo . His undergraduate and graduate students in Tokyo included Yasunori Nomura, Junji Hisano, and Takeo Moroi. In 2019, he was appointed professor at Shanghai Jiaotong University . His research ranges from theoretical particle physics , string theory to cosmology and astrophysics . Among other things, he deals with supersymmetry , inflation models and baryon asymmetry. Yanagida is a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences in Hamburg . In 2017 he visited the Higgs Center of Theoretical Physics at the University of Edinburgh as a visiting scientist.
