The hard corals of the Tubastraea genus are called sun corals or cup corals in German . In contrast to most other hard corals, they do not live in symbiosis with zooxanthellae . They feed on catching plankton . The very voracious, large polyps can overwhelm quite large prey. With the exception of Tubastraea micrantha , the cup corals are not reef-forming (typical of aherma). They often live in the coral reefs of the Indo-Pacific in darker locations on cave ceilings.
The maintenance of Tubastraeen is very difficult for saltwater aquarists . Most imported colonies starve to death after a short time because they have no chance of getting food in an aquarium stocked with fish.
