Family : Land snails (Pomatiidae)
Genre : Tudorella
Type : Tudorella multisulcata
Scientific name
Tudorella multisulcata
( Potiez & Michaud , 1838)

Tudorella multisulcata is a living on the land snails - kind from the family of pomatiidae (Pomatiidae) in the order of sorbeoconcha . It belongs to the species complex Tudorella sulcata and was treated as a subspecies of this species until recently.

features

The slim-conical to slightly elongated-egg-shaped, slightly bulbous housing is 20 to 22 mm high and 10 to 12 mm wide. It has six strongly arched turns with a deep seam. The ornamentation consists of strong spiral lines and radial lines that form a reticulate pattern. The spiral lines are a little more finely developed than the somewhat stronger radial lines. The spiral lines are particularly strongly developed in the navel area. The mouth is egg-shaped, the edge of the mouth is only slightly bent. The last turn detaches a little from the previous turn, so that a narrow gap usually forms between the outer wall of the last turn and the penultimate turn. The chalky operculum is whitish with spiral lines. The nucleus is blackish. The housing is orange to red in color.

In the male sexual apparatus, the penis is bent into a U-shape. The proximal part is uniform, while the distal part initially swells strongly after the bend and tapers to a moderately long point.

Similar species

The casing is orange to red in contrast to the mostly lighter casing of the closely related Tudorella panormitana . In Tudorella panormitana , the spiral ribs and radial ribs are roughly equally strong. The two species also differ in the genital morphology of the males. In Tudorella panormitana , for example, the tip of the penis is drawn out very thin and long, while in Tudorella multisulcata it is also pointed, but is much shorter. Tudorella panormitana also has slightly shorter antennae, smaller snout lobes and a narrower foot. In both species, the shells are larger and slimmer than in Tudorella sulcata . All three types can be easily distinguished from a molecular biological point of view.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The distribution area of the species extends over western Sicily (approximately from Trappani ) and along the coast of southern Sicily. At Trappani the species was found fossil in Pleistocene deposits. According to Pfenninger et al. (2010) the species is also found in Tunisia.

Taxonomy

The taxon was established in 1838 by Valery Louis Victor Potiez and André Louis Gaspard Michaud as Cyclostoma multisulcatum . Until 2010, the species was mostly understood as a synonym or subspecies of Tudorella sulcata . Pfenninger et al. (2010) found major molecular biological differences and treated the taxon as a separate species. However, the taxonomic status as an independent species is not yet generally recognized. The Fauna Europaea continues to list the taxon as a subspecies of Tudorella sulcata , while more recent Italian work already accepts its independence.
