André Louis Gaspard Michaud , also Gaspard Michaud (born December 7, 1795 in Sornac , † April 4, 1880 in Lyon ) was a French malacologist and conchylia collector.

Life

He was the son of a teacher at the Lyceum in Ussel (Corrèze) , who aroused his interest in natural history. He was a very good student and admitted to the Ecole Normale Superieure when his father died in 1813 and he joined the French infantry to support the family, where he was wounded twice during the siege of Metz in 1814/15. In 1820 he became adjutant and in 1837 Capitaine-Adjudante-Major. From 1815 he began to collect conchylia and in 1828 he began to publish scientific publications on mollusks, especially terrestrial (for example from Algeria) and later fossil mollusks ( Miocene of the Hauterives basin ). Over time, his reputation as a malacologist grew, so that not least because of this he became a Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1839. In 1844 he left the army, earned his bachelor's degree at the age of 50 and became a teacher at a school in Sainte-Foy-lès-Lyon founded by his brother Damaze . He was also a municipal employee and in the charity office of the city of Sainte-Foy-lès-Lyon.

His main work is the complement to the Histoire naturelle des Mollusques terrestres et fluviatiles de la France (from 1805) by Jacques Philippe Raymond Draparnaud , which was published in 1831. He created it at the suggestion of the malacologist Jean Pierre Sylvestre Grateloup (1782–1861) from Montpellier. The lithographs came from his friend, the malacologist Ange Paulin Terver . In 1835 he published a catalog of the molluscs in the Museum of Douai with Valéry Louis Victor Potiez (1806-1870) .

Much of his collection (which comprised 30,000 copies) is in the Natural History Museum of Lyon. He first described numerous species and genera.

He was an honorary member of the Belgian Malacological Society, a member of the Académie de Nîmes , the Académie des sciences arts et belles lettres de Mâcon, the Academies of Bordeaux and Metz, the Linné Societies of Lyon, Paris, Bordeaux, and the Société d'horticulture de l'Hérault.
