Étienne Alexandre Arnould Locard (born December 8, 1841 in Lyon , † October 28, 1904 ibid) was a French malacologist , engineer, geologist and historian of science who worked in Lyon.

Life

Locard was the son of the well-known civil engineer Eugène Locard and studied at the École Centrale in Paris, graduating as an engineer in 1866. He became a senior engineer in blast furnaces with Bessemer pear in 1874 , resigned in 1878 and was then civil engineer in Lyon.

He is considered one of the main representatives of a new French school of malacology around Jules René Bourguignat . He described hundreds of new species and genera of freshwater mussels and gastropods (especially the Helix genus of land snails ). He himself did not have a large collection, but worked on the collections in museums (especially the Muséum d'Histoire naturelle de Lyon) or from other collectors, for example the collection of Jacques Philippe Raymond Draparnaud (1772-1804), that of Gaspard Louis André Michaud (1795–1880) or that of Ange Paulin Terver (1798–1875) from the Lyon area. At the Natural History Museum of Lyon, he worked closely with its director Louis Lortet (1838-1909), wrote catalogs of natural history collections (including minerals and geology) and edited the malacological collection of Lortet from the Middle East.

He published very extensively, also on fossil molluscs (Tertiary around Lyon) and the geology of the Lyon region. He also wrote biographies of naturalists and malacologists, especially from the Lyon area, and a history of malacology in antiquity published in 1884.

He was a member of the Académie des sciences, belles-lettres et arts de Lyon (from 1879), the Société française de malacologie, the Société géologique de France and the Société linnéenne de Lyon, of which he became president in 1882. He was also a founding member of the Association lyonnaise des amis des sciences naturelles.

He was the father of forensic scientist Edmond Locard .
