Albert Falsan

Claude Alexandre Albert Falsan (born May 14, 1833 in Lyon , † February 12, 1902 in Saint-Cyr-au-Mont-d'Or ) was a French geologist who worked in Lyon.

Life

He was the son of the Lyon silk merchant and manufacturer Pierre-Honoré Falsan. His mother Thèrese was related to the photography pioneer Nicéphore Niépce and his grandfather Claude François Falsan (1760–1839) was a respected silk manufacturer and syndic of the Lyon Chamber of Commerce. Albert Falsan too was initially supposed to become a businessman, but while studying in Lyon he followed his inclinations for art (he exhibited in the Salon of Lyon in 1864) and natural sciences, especially geology and botany. He did not graduate, but continued to deal intensively with geology, especially the area around Lyon, the French Jura and the French Alps, and published (also in the form of geological maps). His evidence of an Ice Age glaciation in the Rhone Valley, the edge of which he precisely mapped, attracted particular attention. He presented the results in 1875 at an international geology congress in Geneva and he received awards such as the Prix Bordin for his research.

His collections are in the Musée des Confluences . From 1869 he was a member of the Académie des Sciences , Belles-Lettres et Arts de Lyon and a member of many other academies (e.g. in Geneva, Savoy, Annecy, Aix-en-Provence, Marseille and various Lyon academies). He was a Knight of the Order of St. Maurice et Lazare and Saint Jacques de Portugal , Officier de l ' Instruction publique and received the gold medal of the Academy of Lyon and in 1880 a gold medal in a competition of the Sorbonne.

He was the uncle of the archaeologist and theologian Marie-Joseph Lagrange .
