Tue Bjørn Thomsen (born December 21, 1972 in Aasiaat , Greenland , † April 23, 2006 in Copenhagen ) was a Danish boxer .

Amateur career

As an amateur boxer, he was Danish light heavyweight champion in 1996 and Danish heavyweight champion in 1997. At the 17th International Copenhagen Cup in 1996, he won the gold medal in the light heavyweight division after victories against Ion Voica and Steffen Nielsen. In qualifying for the European Championship in 1997, he defeated the French Henere Tahiata and the Hungarian Zoltán Kiss, but lost just on points against the Russian Sergey Volodin and the German Maik Hanke (vice world champion 2000).

At the 9th World Championships in Budapest in 1997, he won the bronze medal in the heavyweight division. He defeated Esmir Kukić from Bosnia, Volodymyr Lasebnyk (Vice European Champion 1998) from Ukraine and Wojciech Bartnik (3rd place Olympic Games 1993) from Poland, before losing in the semifinals to three-time Olympic champion and five-time world champion Félix Savón from Cuba.

Professional career

He switched to the professional camp in 1997 and was managed by the legendary "Team Palle", whose chief promoter Mogens Palle was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2008. During his professional career, Thomsen boxed exclusively in Denmark.

On September 4, 1998 he defeated the World Cup challenger of the WBA Damon Reed (23 wins - 2 losses) by unanimous decision. On November 6, 1998, there was a unanimous victory on points against the former WBA , IBF and WBC world champion Iran Barkley .

On March 19, 1999, he won on points against the Dominican champion Marcial Vinicio. On June 18, 1999, he won the Danish heavyweight championship by winning points against Mark Hulstrom. On November 26, 1999, he won unanimously on points against the eventual South American champion Pedro Daniel Franco.

On February 18, 2000, he defeated the Mexican champion and two-time World Cup challenger Mike Sedillo by knockout in the fourth round. In his next fight on March 31st, he won on points against former WBA world champion Nate Miller and thus secured the world title of the International Boxing Council (IBC) in cruiserweight division.

Almost two months later, he suffered a knockout loss in the fourth round against South African champions Jacob Mofokeng, which resulted in an eleven-month break in the ring. After building wins against Curtis McDorman (5-2) and Bradley Rone (7-29), he won on September 21, 2001 unanimously on points against the multiple title holder Rob Calloway (39-3).

He played his last professional fight on October 25, 2002 in Esbjerg against the Brazilian Carlos Eduardo Balduino de Melo; Due to a cut injury unintentionally caused by de Melo at Thomsen, the fight was stopped in the first round and counted as a technical draw.

On the night of April 23, 2006, Tue Thomsen was stabbed to death in an argument in front of a pub in central Copenhagen. A few months later, the perpetrator was sentenced to 12 years imprisonment for manslaughter.
