The Tufts University is a private university in Medford and Somerville , both suburbs of Boston , which has a strong liberal arts combines -Training with a strong research university culture. The university's college is among the 20 most selective in the United States : in 2016, it only accepted 14.3% of applicants.

The institution was founded by Charles Tufts in 1852 as Tufts College and in 1954 renamed "Tufts University". Tufts now has 3,500 employees and approximately 8,500 students from the United States and over 100 other countries. Tufts University is made up of Tufts College and various faculties on four campuses, namely in Medford / Somerville, Boston and Grafton in Massachusetts and Talloires in France . The main campus on Walnut Hill, on the Medford and Somerville border, houses the School of Arts and Sciences and the School of Engineering, both of which offer both bachelor and master degrees, and the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy , the oldest Graduate School for International Relations in the USA.

Boston is home to the medical faculty ( Tufts School of Medicine ) and the dental faculty ( Tufts School of Dental Medicine ). Grafton is home to the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine . In Talloires the university has an old monastery building that is used for summer courses and conferences.

Tufts University ranks high in various university rankings. Tufts University was ranked 28th among the best universities in the United States by the US News and World Report. Forbes Magazine ranked Tufts University 34th among the best US colleges. In 2010, the Times Higher Education World University Rankings ranked Tufts # 53 in the world. Tufts is also the university with the twelfth most Fulbright Scholars (it shares the place with Harvard and Johns Hopkins ). The Tufts Pass in Antarctica is named after the university .

history

Tufts University was founded in 1852. The namesake Charles Tufts bequeathed to the Unitarian Church the approximately eight hectare piece of land with a value of 20,000 US dollars at the time on Walnut Hill in Massachusetts on the border of Medford and Somerville for the explicit establishment of a university. Tradition has it that when a friend asked Charles Tufts what he was going to do with the empty piece of land on Walnut Hill, he replied, “I will put a light on this hill.” it ”). The university's motto, “Pax et Lux” (“Peace and Light”), adopted in 1857, reflects this idea and the light in the tower of Goddard Chapel on Walnut Hill shines over the neighboring towns today.

The first three Tufts college graduates graduated in 1857. The university grew rapidly in the late 19th century with the establishment of new school departments and the completion of major construction projects on Walnut Hill. One of the big donors to the new university was ringmaster Phineas Taylor Barnum , after whom the first building for academic use only on the university's campus was named. Barnum also owes the university its mascot , Jumbo the elephant.
