Tullio Vinay (* 1909 in La Spezia , † September 2, 1996 in Rome ) was an Italian Waldensian pastor, theologian and politician.

Life

As the son of a teacher, he grew up in Trieste and in Torre Pellice in northern Italy. He studied theology at the Waldensian faculties in Rome and Edinburgh . From 1934 to 1946 he was pastor of the Waldensian parish in Florence. During this time he hid anti-fascists in his apartment, later also ex-fascists .

In 1946 Vinay left his church in Florence and founded the ecumenical meeting center "Agape" near Prali . Here he wanted to unite young people to live and work together. He summed up his goal as follows: “Agape will be a place where people meet and where they will linger for a short time in search of brotherly love. Then they return home. Essentially, they're teenagers. They form a contemporary community that lives religiously, far removed from the habits of everyday life. ”The architect was his friend Leonardo Ricci . When asked when the idea had occurred to him, he replied: "When we discovered, with astonished amazement and fear, that God loves us."

In 1961 he accepted a pastor's post in Riesi , Sicily. He later said: “During our investigations we found that Riesi was the town that perhaps needed us the most. So we stayed in Riesi and saw that the economic misery of the population is closely linked to the social and moral. The misery, the great misery that prevails here, affects every visitor directly. "

The Diakoniezentrum “ Servizio Cristiano ” was founded in Riesi in 1961 and today consists of a kindergarten, a primary school, a guest house, a family counseling center and an agricultural department, as well as a facility for people with disabilities. Originally there was also a vocational school as well as a homework and mechanical engineering cooperative. His friend, the architect Leonardo Ricci, designed the Monte degli Ulivi building ensemble .

From 1976 to 1983 he was a representative of the Communist Party in the Italian Senate . In 1987 he received the Dr. Leopold Lucas Prize .

In 1982 the Yad Vashem Memorial awarded him the title of " Righteous Among the Nations ".
