Tupuola Taisi Tufuga Efi
Tui Atua Tupua Tamasese Efi (official title, status 2014, born March 1, 1938 in Motootua ) was head of state ( O le Ao o le Malo ) of Samoa from 2007 to July 2017 . He was previously the country's Prime Minister twice.
Life
Efi belongs to one of the princely families of Samoa and is the holder of the honorary titles "Tamasese" and "Tafaifa Tui Aana" (also in the spelling Tui Aʻanan ). After being awarded the title “Tupuola”, he was appointed a member of the Council of Deputies , a small body made up of members of high aristocratic families who, through their membership, are automatically deputies of the current head of state.
The son of the first co-head of state with Tupua Tamasese Mea'ole , who died on April 5, 1963, became Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of what was then Western Samoa for the first time on March 24, 1976 as the successor to his uncle Tupua Tamasese Lealofi IV . On his mother's side he is - like Misa Telefoni Retzlaff - a grandson of the successful Samoan businessman Olaf Frederick Nelson (also: Taisi Olaf ), who comes from a Swedish-Samoan mixed marriage.
During his tenure, a general strike initiated by the Public Service Association in 1981 paralyzed the country for several months. After the parliamentary elections of April 1982 he was replaced as Prime Minister by Va'ai Kolone after the election victory of the Human Rights Protection Party (HRPP) on April 13, 1982 .
After an investigation into bribery and corruption was initiated against the Kolone government, Efi was again prime minister on September 18, 1982. On December 31, 1982, however, he had to surrender the office of Prime Minister to the chairman of the HRPP Tofilau Eti Alesana .
On December 30, 1985, Prime Minister Kolone appointed him Deputy Prime Minister. He held this office until Alesana took over government again on April 8, 1988.
With the death of Malietoa Tanumafili II on May 11, 2007, the office of head of state became vacant. On June 16, 2007, Efi was elected as his successor for five years by parliament and he was sworn in on June 20. After the end of the first term of office, Efi was confirmed for another five years in 2012 with no opposing candidates. This term of office lasts until July 25, 2017. On July 5, 2017 Tuimalealiʻifano Vaʻaletoa Sualauvi II was appointed as the new head of state, as Efi did not take up a third term.
