Misa Telefoni Retzlaff , short forms: Misa Telefoni, Telefoni Retzlaff; real name: Hermann Theodor Retzlaff ; as a writer: HT Retzlaff   (born May 21, 1952 in Apia , Samoa ) is a Samoan politician, lawyer, manager and writer of German, Irish, Samoan and Swedish descent. Retzlaff has held a number of public offices at national and international level, such as the position of Vice Director General of the WHO, that of Vice Prime Minister (Western) Samoas and the Public Prosecutor General of the island state. Most recently, Retzlaff was Vice Prime Minister and Samoan Minister for Trade, Industry and Labor until 2011. As previously announced, he said goodbye to politics in the 2011 general election.

Misa Telefoni Retzlaff is the son of Hermann Paul Retzlaff (son of a German-Samoan / Irish mixed marriage) and his wife Piliopo Joyce Rosabel Retzlaff (née Nelson ), a daughter of the successful Samoan businessman Olaf Frederick Nelson (also: Taisi Olaf ), who comes from a Swedish-Samoan mixed marriage. A grandson of Olaf Frederick Nelsons is also the current head of state Samoas Tupuola Taisi Tufuga Efi .

Misa Telefoni's paternal grandfather Erich Retzlaff came from Stettin and came to the country in 1906 on behalf of the German Empire, whose colony was Western Samoa (" German Samoa ") at the time, to set up the Samoan telephone network. Since then, following a Samoan tradition, the Retzlaffs have been referred to as the Telefoni family. Misa is a Samoan Matai title awarded to Hermann Theodor Retzlaff in 1984. He is married to Sarah Pulepule Retzlaff (née Young ).

Life

Retzlaff attended King's College in Auckland in New Zealand and then the University of Auckland , where he studied (among other things) law . He completed his law studies with a Bachelor of Laws . Then Retzlaff initially worked as a lawyer in Samoa before he was appointed Attorney General of his country in 1986 (until 1988). In 1986 Misa Telefoni was also elected Pro-Chancellor of the National University of Samoa (until 1998).

Retzlaff began his political career in 1988 when he resigned from his position as attorney general to run for a seat in parliament in the Fono . In his early years an opposition politician, he switched to the ruling Human Rights Protection Party (HRPP) in 1991 and became Minister of Agriculture, Forestry, Fisheries, Meteorology and Shipping in 1992 under Tofilau Eti Alesana (until 1996). In later cabinets, Retzlaff held the offices of Minister of Health (1996 to 2001), Minister of Finance (2001 to 2006) and Minister of Trade, Industry and Labor (2006 to 2011). Between 2001 and 2011 he was also Vice Prime Minister of his state and also from 2001 to 2011 Retzlaff was also deputy chairman of his party HRPP.

On the international stage, Hermann Theodor Retzlaff took part in various conferences, such as the FAO conferences between 1992 and 1996, the WHO conferences between 1996 and 2001, and the Commonwealth Law Conference in 1999. International offices were one of them Vice-WHO Director General 1999, President in Office of the ACP countries (2007/08).

Retzlaff was a manager at Polynesian Airlines , Telecom Samoa and H & H Retzlaff Legal Office .

In 2005, Retzlaff's (as: HT Retzlaff ) novel Love and Money was published.
