Francis turbine

The pump or turbine house in Neustadt is a listed building in Detmold in the Lippe district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ).

History and architecture

In 1854 Ferdinand Brune designed a pump system to operate a fountain system in the palace garden . But Councilor Stein rejected Brunes' plans, considering them to be inappropriate. This resulted in a modified plan by the future court architect Wilhelm von Meien, which was approved and commissioned by the prince.

The octagonal machine house in Romanesque shapes made of ashlar masonry and stone parts was built in 1855. Water from the nearby Friedrichstaler Canal was pumped into a natural stone basin on the Papenberg above the Palaisgarten via a Francis turbine made by Alfred Wever & Co. from Barmen, which is still in working order . The water features in the palace garden could be supplied by the natural water pressure, after which the water was fed back into the canal.

In 1992 the Friends of the Residence financed a new electric pump to protect the Francis turbine. In 2008 the pipes were renewed and since then the water features have been fed directly by the pump.
