Michael Karl Graf von Althann Freiherr on the Goldburg in Murstetten (* May 2, 1801 in Linz , † May 16, 1881 in Cannes ) was an Austro-Prussian landowner and politician.

Althann came from the Althann family , who owned extensive land in the Austrian Empire as well as some goods in the Prussian county of Glatz since 1763 . Through the possession of the Majorat Mittelwalde , the family held a hereditary seat in the Prussian manor house . The Althann also had a hereditary seat in the Austrian manor .

Karl von Althann was the second son of Michael Maximilian Franz Graf von Althann (1769-1834) and Maria Franziska Eleonore Countess of Thürheim (1774-1818). The manor house member Michael Joseph and the kk officer Michael Ferdinand were brothers of his. Karl von Althann married Luise Countess von Nostitz-Rieneck (1805–1849) for the first time in 1832 . In his second marriage, Althann married Caroline Sarah Thomas in 1850, with whom he had a daughter and a son Michael Robert , who was also his heir.

Life

Althann was an officer and retired from the Austrian army with the rank of lieutenant colonel. After the death of his brother Michael Joseph, he became lord of Mittelwalde, Schönfeld , Wölfelsdorf (County Glatz, Silesia), the dominions of Zwentendorf and Murstetten (Austria) and Swojschitz , Grulich and Militschoves (Bohemia). He was a first class Spanish grandee . In the Archduchy of Austria above and below the Enns, he had the ceremonial rank of Colonel Hereditary Pre-cutter, shield bearer and referee.

From 1861 until his death in 1881, Karl von Althann was a member of both the Prussian mansion and the Austrian mansion with hereditary rights.
