On January 8, 2003, an Avro RJ100 crashed on Turkish Airlines Flight 634 near Diyarbakır Airport . 75 of the 80 occupants were killed in the accident.
Course and cause
Turkish Airlines' Avro RJ100 took off at 6:35 p.m. from Istanbul Ataturk Airport for a scheduled flight to the eastern Turkish city of Diyarbakır . The visibility conditions at the destination airport were extremely poor due to the darkness and the very low cloud cover.
The air traffic controller in Diyarbakır gave the crew clearance for an approach to runway 34. This runway did not have an instrument landing system (ILS), so the approach was aligned with the radio beacon (VOR / DME) of the airport. When the pilots reached the decision height, they thought they could see the glow of the landing lights through the fog and continued their descent. Shortly afterwards, they again lost visual contact with the runway, but did not abort the attempt to land, instead they flew into the area.
At 8:28 p.m., the machine hit a restricted military area about 900 meters from the landing threshold . Initially, soldiers were able to rescue five passengers and one crew member alive from the rubble. A two-year-old child subsequently died from his injuries.
