Turritopsis rubra

Systematics
Class : Hydrozoa
Order : Anthomedusae
Subordination : Filifera
Family : Oceaniidae
Genre : Turritopsis
Type : Turritopsis rubra
Scientific name
Turritopsis rubra
( Farquhar , 1895)

Turritopsis rubra is a Hydrozoen - Art from the genus Turritopsis in the family of oceaniidae . Like other species of the genus Turritopsis , it was previously synonymous with Turritopsis nutricula .

features

Turritopsis rubra forms initially stolonized , later erect hydroid colonies. The polysiphonic (consisting of numerous tubes) trunks are up to 5 cm high. The slack, spindle-shaped, up to 0.8 mm high polyp heads (hydrants) have 12 to 20 thread-like tentacles of different lengths (max. 0.6 mm). The tentacles are scattered across the distal 3/4 of the hydrant. New Zealand hydrants are intensely orange-red in color.

Young detached medusa have round with 8 tentacles, New Zealand specimens are bright orange. Adult medusa are 3 to 4, maximum 7 millimeters high and bell-shaped, with up to 120 tentacles in one or two rows. The stomach and gonads are bright red.

distribution

Turritopsis rubra is common around New Zealand and Tasmania .

Taxonomy

Based on morphological differences and differences in life cycle, Schuchert (2004) considers the Turritopsis of New Zealand to be different from Turritopsis nutricula of the Eastern Atlantic. The population is therefore, supported by molecular studies, again regarded as a separate, valid species Turritopsis rubra . The analysis of a colony of polyps from the type locality of Turritopsis rubra ( Wellington Harbor , North Island New Zealand) revealed the same haplotype as from a Medusa from Auckland (also North Island New Zealand) and shows that Turritopsis rubra is the only representative of the genus in New Zealand. A Turritopsis -Meduse from Tasmania did not differ morphologically from Turritopsis rubra , therefore falls within the Turritopsis-rubra - clade , thus expanding the range of the species in Tasmania.
