The Punic necropolis Tuvixeddu ( Sardinian perforated area ) is located on a hill in the northern part of Cagliari in Sardinia and consists of several thousand rock tombs dating from the 6th to 3rd centuries BC. And for the most part were robbed in the early days. In the Punic-Roman-Early Christian phase there was a necropolis on the hill of Bonaria and a Roman burial place, the Heroon of Atilia Pomptilla in the Grotta della Vipera (Grotto of the Viper).

In the 6th century the occupying power of the island changed and the Phoenician custom of cremation and urn burial in Tepathim, as can be seen in Sant'Antioco and Tharros , went over to Punic body burial. With this method of burial, the deceased was buried in pits or stone boxes, but ideally in a rock grave. He lay on a death bed, on a stretcher , and occasionally in a pithos . Some of the rock graves, which are often intended for multiple burials, were accessed via a dromos or a mastaba-like vertical shaft up to 12 m deep. At the lower end was the burial chamber closed with a plate. After the burial it was filled in and marked with a cippus . Other graves are carved horizontally into the rock. The graves were furnished with everyday objects of a profane and sacred nature (such as ostrich eggs), weapons, jewelry, as well as food and drinks.
