Tuz Churmatu ( Arabic طوز خورماتو, DMG Ṭūz Ḫūrmātū , also Tûz Xûrmatû or Tuz for short ; Turkmen Tuzhurmatu ; Kurdish دووزخورماتوو dûzxurmatû ; English Tuz Khurmatu / Khurmato ) is an Iraqi city in the Salah ad-Din governorate on the main road 2 from Kirkuk to Baghdad on the Ak Su river. The city has 59,189 inhabitants (as of 2010) and is 220 m high.
The population is made up of Turkomans , Kurds and Arabs . Smaller minorities include the Aramaeans and Assyrians . In November 2012, clashes between the Iraqi army and Kurdish Peshmerga of the autonomous region of Kurdistan took place over the city, which is predominantly populated by Turkmen .
