Twin City

Twin City describes a concept of seeing the two cities of Vienna and Bratislava (Pressburg) as twin cities and of planning and operating their development in coordination with one another or together.

Vienna and Bratislava

  • are the two EU capitals closest to each other (60 km),
  • are both capitals of small states,
  • are both on the Danube and
  • were - with the exception of the time of the Iron Curtain  - always in close economic and cultural relationships.

The two cities are located in the Centrope region ( Central European Region ), which includes areas from four EU member states. The two cities pursued the concept especially between 2005 and 2010, but efforts have now died down somewhat.

Around 3 million people live in the metropolitan area .

Fly Niki plans to offer flights between Vienna and Bratislava were not implemented.

In the meantime, collaborations are increasingly being carried out at Centrope level with additional partners such as the Province of Lower Austria.
