The Twin Crater (English for twin crater ) is a volcanic crater on the Hut Point Peninsula in the southwest of the Antarctic Ross Island . It is behind McMurdo Station and half a mile west of Crater Hill .
Frank Debenham , participant of the British Terra Nova Expedition (1910-1913), named him Middle Crater (English for middle crater ) because of its relative geographic location between the First Crater and Crater Hill. This designation is no longer relevant today. It owes its current descriptive name to the two volcanic cones that rise up inside the crater. This has been used on maps and in reports since at least 1971. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names recognized the designation on June 19, 2000, and the New Zealand Antarctic Place-Names Committee followed on February 20, 2001.
