The protein twist is the gene product of a so-called "master" gene. A master gene coordinates the activity of other genes as part of a cellular process. Twist plays an essential role in the early embryonic development of multicellular animals , where it enables and directs the migration of certain cells in the embryonic tissue (controls the epithelial - mesenchymal transition during gastrulation ). The activity of the twist gene only extends over a short period of embryonic development; in the further course of life, twist is completely shut down in healthy individuals.

The research group led by Robert Weinberg from Withehead Institute for Biomedical Research that the Twist gene, by reactivating succeeded in showing metastasis of cancer cells is possible.
