Scheme of the Cotswold Severn Tomb

Although the Cotswold Severn tomb megalithic complex was classified in the Black Mountains group , it stands in a remote location in the Brecon Beacons overlooking the Usk floodplain . The chamber and capstone are oriented towards the 886 m high Pen y Fan , the highest point of the beacons.

John Aubrey (1626–1697) examined the place in the 17th century. Later investigations were made by Edward Lhuyd (1660-1709), who described the monument as having bearing stones, a large flat capstone and rock carvings on either side of the rectangular chamber. He notes that the approximately 2.0 × 1.0 m measuring north-south oriented chamber stood within an oval, more plowed oval hill of about 23.0 × 16.0 m. A small rectangular structure at the north end can belong to a second chamber. An engraving by Harry Longueville Jones (1806–1870 - from 1867) shows the access side with posts and capstone. The two outer stones shown can belong to the inner section of the two horns.

Five posts have what appears to be medieval graffiti , including a harp and the dates 1312 (in Roman numerals) and 1510. A side stone shows at least eight crosses. Another wears around 60 diamonds, diamonds or crosses, these cannot be prehistoric as there are no parallels.
