Tyler W. Ziegel (Ty Ziegel) (born October 16, 1982 in Peoria , Illinois , † December 26, 2012 there ) was an American marine . He was seriously injured and severely disfigured by fighting in 2004 during the Iraq war.

He gained international fame through his marriage to his fiancée Renee Kline. Her wedding picture (photographer Nina Berman) was selected for the World Press Photo 2006 in the portrait category, her wedding day (October 7, 2006) was declared a public holiday in Illinois (USA). The marriage ended in divorce in January 2008. His fate was part of a public debate in the United States about deficiencies in the care of veterans by the United States War Veterans Department .

Life

Brick was born on October 16, 1982 in Peoria at the Methodist Medical Center of Illinois. He grew up in Metamora , Illinois and attended Metamora Township High School from 1998 to 2001 . He completed this in 2001 and decided to join the United States Marine Corps in Cherry Point , North Carolina , where he was posted to Iraq in spring 2003 . Brick had been in action here for 18 months and was seriously injured by a car bomb during a routine check on December 21, 2004.

As a result of the assassination, Ziegel lost his left forearm, three fingers in his right hand and he went blind in his right eye. He suffered extensive burns that resulted in the loss of his face and ears. His destroyed skull had to be replaced with a plastic implant. After being transported back to the United States, he stayed at Brooke Army Medical Center in Texas for 18 months to recover . After more than 50 operations, Ziegel was able to leave the hospital.

In the fall of 2012, Ziegel played a suitor in director Stephan Littger's US film Malorie's Final Score and as Spc Burch shortly before his death in the action drama Short Film Nothing Real .

After his release, Ziegel worked as a visiting professor at Life University in Marietta , Georgia until his death .

On December 26, Brick slipped on an ice rink in his hometown of Metamora and later died at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria , Illinois .
