Tylecodon fragilis is a species of the genus Tylecodon in the thick-leaf family(Crassulaceae).

description

Tylecodon fragilis grows slightly branched and ascending, with a bulbous base that is up to 2.5 centimeters in diameter and up to 16 centimeters high. The plants have a gray bark that peels off. The brittle and smooth shoots are up to 35 centimeters long and 4 millimeters in diameter. They have a gray-white bark with distinct or inconspicuous darker, gray-green to black stripes. The softly succulent, linear, petal-round to slightly flattened leaves are 2.5 to 5 centimeters long and 2 to 3 millimeters wide. The upper side of the leaf is slightly furrowed, the tip blunt to pointed with an attached tip.

The inflorescences form thyrses up to 7 centimeters high with 1 to 4 monochasias , which in turn end in 1 to 3 upright to slightly spread out single flowers. The flower stalk becomes about 5 millimeters long. The triangular-lanceolate sepals are 2 millimeters long. The tubular and yellowish green colored corolla tube is smooth and 10 to 12 millimeters long and 4 millimeters wide. It is slightly widened towards the throat. The expanded tips are blunt and later bent back. They are 5 millimeters long and 2 millimeters wide.

Systematics and distribution

Tylecodon fragilis is widespread in South Africa in the provinces of North Cape and West Cape in Strandveld and in the succulent Karoo in cracks in the rock. It was first described in 1971 by Robert Allen Dyer as Cotyledon fragilis . Helmut Richard Tölken placed the species in the genus Tylecodon in 1978 .
