Tylecodon leucothrix is a species of the genus Tylecodon in the family of thick-leaf plants (Crassulaceae).

description

Tylecodon leucothrix grows as an upright, little branched small shrub with a height of 5 to 18 centimeters. The mostly single main shoot is often clearly spherical to irregularly swollen and reaches a diameter of 1.5 to 6.5 centimeters. The smooth bark peels off in yellowish gray, also brown to purple colored stripes and exposes the green to brown trunk. The roots are fibrous.

The linearly elliptical to narrowly lanceolate or inverted lanceolate leaves appear close together at the tips of the shoots of the plant. The leaf blade is furrowed to runny on the upper side, the underside is curved outwards. The leaves are 2.5 to 7.5 inches long and 0.8 to 1 cm wide and are covered with glandular hair. The blade is wedge-shaped at the base and pointed at the tip.

blossom

The inflorescences form thyrses up to 34 centimeters long with 1 to 5 monochasias , which in turn end in 1 to 3 individual flowers. The inflorescence stalk , up to 2 millimeters in diameter , becomes 8 to 20 centimeters long and has glandular hairs at the base. The flower stalk becomes 5 to 25 millimeters long. Its flower tube reaches a length of up to 10 millimeters with a diameter of 4 millimeters. The white to pink corolla lobes are spread out and 3 to 4 millimeters long.

Systematics and distribution

Tylecodon leucothrix is widespread in the Western Cape province of South Africa in the winter rain areas of the succulent caroo. The first description as Adromischus leucothrix was made in 1939 by Christo Albertyn Smith . In 1941 the plant was recombined by Fourcade as cotyledon leucothrix and Helmut Richard Tölken placed it in the genus Tylecodon in 1978 .

A synonym of the species is Cotyledon swartbergensis .
