The cargo ship - type Africa was a series of multi-purpose cargo ships from the Mathias Thesen shipyard in Wismar .
history
In the early 1960s, the VEB Deutsche Seereederei Rostock (DSR) set up the Uniafrika liner service together with the Polish shipping company PZM . The types of ship used turned out to be not optimal for the conditions of the West African ports. Type IV ships in particular were too big for ports in estuaries. Therefore, from 1965 onwards, a 6,950 tdw liner was developed at the Mathias Thesen shipyard. In 1969 the Wismar was the first of six ships to be put into service with DSR, the Fürstenberg the last ship in 1971. All ships were decommissioned by DSR between 1990 and 1992 and sold to various shipping companies. All ships were scrapped by 1997.

technology
The multi-purpose freighters were swap-decks with a forecastle and had modern equipment. Twelve loading booms with lifting capacities between 5 and 14 tons and a heavy lift boom with 50 tons were available as loading gear, which meant that the ships were largely independent of shore loading equipment. The large hatches of the four holds provided a small amount of underwater storage. There were also two refrigerated holds and two tanks each for sweet oil and wine.
The main engine type MAN 7 KZ 60/105 E was on the bridge moved out, first in the 16- and later 24-hour unsupervised operation.
