The Dresden Atrium type (often short: Dresden type ) is a standard design for school buildings in prefabricated construction . It is based on a project by the Technical University of Dresden from 1963 and represents a particularly common type of building type among the type school buildings in the GDR . In the Dresden district alone, around 180 such buildings were erected between 1963 and 1981. In certain areas of Eastern Germany, the Dresden Atrium type is still the most common school building shape today. One of them, the 49th “Bernhard August von Lindenau” elementary school in Dresden, is now a listed building.

construction

The buildings have two longitudinal structures on the front and rear. The three transverse wings contain stairwells and connecting corridors through which one reaches the classrooms. Two small inner courtyards are enclosed by them. Since there is no auditorium or a similarly large hall here , the basement rooms were mostly used for school meals . For large schools, several buildings of this type were modularly lined up and sometimes connected to one another by means of passageways.

When erected, the buildings corresponded to the building technology of the GDR in the sense of the prefabricated construction method. Characteristic is the large-scale use of window areas, which contributes to poor building physics . Due to their comparatively poor thermal insulation , the buildings have a high heating energy requirement.

use

In the 1990s, fewer schools were needed in eastern Germany due to the lack of children and emigration. During this time, Dresden-type schools were preferred to be closed and demolished, as their energetic renovation proved to be too costly. Older / traditional buildings were therefore preferred when planning the school network.

Many of the Dresden type schools are still preserved today as

  • Empty reserve capacity, for example for temporary use as a branch office when the number of students fluctuates
  • used unrenovated buildings
  • used partially renovated building
  • modernized school locations, see for example 93rd Primary School Dresden, 101st Middle School Dresden and Bertolt-Brecht-Gymnasium Dresden

The 49th elementary school in Dresden was founded in November 2013 as one of the last remaining in its original state Atrium building under monument protection provided.
