history

In contrast to the older Type 63 , the Type 80 is not a direct further development of the Type 59, but contains some important innovations. He has a newly developed tub . The studies on this began in 1978, but production did not begin until 1988. The manufacturer was China North Industries Corporation (NORINCO) with headquarters in Beijing .

The army of the People's Liberation Army purchased around 500 of these main battle tanks between 1985 and 1995. Another 20 pieces were sent to the armed forces of Myanmar delivered.

Furnishing

The Type 80 has a welded hull and is divided into three separate compartments with the driver at the front, the fighting compartment in the middle, and the engine and gearbox on the rear axle. The places for the commander , gunner and loader are in the tower.

The Type 80 is equipped with a fire alarm and extinguishing system and a rescue beam as standard. For crossing deep water, the tank can be equipped with a snorkel and a periscope . If necessary, the front can be equipped with composite armor. To increase the range, two additional tanks can be mounted at the rear, which can be thrown off after use. It is also equipped with six dual rubber-tyred wheels and a drive wheel on each side.

The second model of the Type 80-II (also Type 80B) was equipped with an improved fire control system, which was also retrofitted in the previous models; a semi-automatic replaced the previous manual transmission. He also received a laser rangefinder with integrated Future Combat Systems . It was the first Chinese tank to have collective NBC protective equipment with an overpressure system so that the crew members inside the tank do not have to wear individual NBC protective suits.
