The Učka Tunnel (pronounced Učka) is a toll road tunnel in Croatia and the shortest road connection from Rijeka to Istria (through the Učka Mountains ). The tunnel is managed by the private operating company Bina-Istra . It is located on the motorway A8 ( Rovinj - Rijeka), a frequently by tourists used route. In the main season, up to 6,674 vehicles drive through the tunnel every day.

The 5,062 meter long tunnel was commissioned in 1981. The height of the portals is around 495 meters above sea level.

In the European ADAC road tunnel test in 2004, the tunnel performed worst with the grade "poor". This is mainly due to the damaged road surface and the inadequate equipment with escape routes. In 2005 the roadway in the tunnel was renewed. Furthermore, special ventilation systems are to be introduced in the event of fire . There are even plans to build a completely new road tunnel through the Učka Mountains.

Since 2012, the operator has received two vehicles from Ziegler , which can save up to 12 people and drive in two directions with an electric motor.

In the European ADAC road tunnel test 2020, which was carried out on the occasion of a deadline set by the European Union for the renovation and improvement of European tunnels, the Učka tunnel again failed as the second worst tunnel. Among other things, the excessive distance between the existing breakdown bays, as well as the lack of emergency exits, loudspeakers and the lack of external access for the rescue workers were criticized. In addition, it is confusing that the number of lanes in front of and in the tunnel is not the same.
