From the submarine class I , officially called Type I , two boats were built by Deschimag AG Weser in Bremen between 1935 and 1936 . The U 25 and U 26 were basically test boats that were further developed from the Gür submarine built for the Turkish Navy by German technicians in Spain .
history
Both boats were used as school boats for the 2nd submarine flotilla before the war . The boats had considerable problems with depth control and should therefore not be used as combat boats. The Navy assumed that crews who got along with the type I boats shouldn't have any problems with the type II , VII A, VII B, VII C and IX boats that are much more controllable .
Because of the lack of boats from the front, both boats had to be commanded for front use from 1939 ( U 26 ) and from 1940 ( U 25 ):
U 25 completed five patrols, took u. a. participated in the Weser exercise before it ran into a mine on August 1, 1940 . There was a total loss.
U 26 was sunk by British depth charges on July 1, 1940 . 48 crew members survived the sinking. U 26 ran seven patrols between 1939 and 1940.
