In the submarine class UD it was submarines , originally for Austria-Hungary were built. After the First World War , they were taken over by the Imperial German Navy . The submarine class UD should not be confused with the turbine- powered U-cruiser SM UD 1 of the Imperial Navy, which was commissioned in 1918 .

As early as 1913, Austria-Hungary had ordered five submarines from the Germania shipyard. After the beginning of the First World War in July 1914, after negotiations with Austria, the boats were taken over by the German Navy and completed. They were put into service between July and September 1915 as SM U 66 to SM U 70 .
