Univention Corporate Server @ school ( UCS @ school ) is a software to identity management and IT infrastructures for several schools to operate and manage centrally. It is based on the open source platform Univention Corporate Server , an enterprise Linux distribution with integrated identity management and IT management system . The software is aimed primarily at school authorities and federal states who want to relieve their schools of the operation of the IT infrastructures and provide offers that are accessible across schools, from anywhere and at any time via the Internet. In addition, it contains numerous functions for computer-aided teaching and for controlling classic PCs and mobile devices in school use. The main developer is Univention GmbH from Bremen .

history

The authority of the Bremen Senator for Education and Science has been developing and implementing a central offer for the provision of IT infrastructure for schools in Bremen as part of the “Service and Operating Concept for IT Infrastructure” (SuBITI) project. In this regard, it has been cooperating with the Bremen company Univention GmbH from the start, which began developing Univention Corporate Server in 2002, the operating and management platform on which UCS @ school is based. Since then it has been continuously developed. It was finally ready for the market in 2009 and is now used by German and Swiss schools together with the Univention Corporate Server.

The Baden-Württemberg state media center , which had previously supplied two thirds of the secondary schools and around half of the vocational schools in Baden-Württemberg with its own solution, the so-called "educational model solution" ( paedML ), announced in September 2012 that it would be UCS @ school to be used in future as the basis for the further development of the Linux variant of paedML and to commission Univention with the further development of this software. On July 8, 2014, the “new” paedML Linux 6.0, which is based on UCS @ school from this version on, was presented to the public. The State Media Center Baden-Württemberg makes them available to all schools for use in their school IT infrastructure.

In June 2016, a framework agreement was signed with educa.ch, the Swiss media institute for education and culture, which offers all public educational institutions in Switzerland easy and inexpensive access to the open source products of Univention GmbH.

License

Univention Corporate Server , the operating and management system from UCS @ school, was published up to version 2.3 under the GNU GPL . With the release of version 2.4, the manufacturer switched to the GNU AGPL .
