The UFO houses of Sanzhi ( Chinese  三芝 飛碟 屋 , Pinyin Sānzhī Fēidiéwū ), also the gondola houses of Sanzhi or the gondola settlement of Sanjhih , were a holiday village planned from the late 1970s on from gondola-shaped houses in the Sanzhi district of New Taipei on Taiwan's north coast. The buildings were abandoned soon after they were built, so the settlement slowly fell into disrepair . From 2008 to 2010 the facility was then completely demolished.

Construction and vacancy

The buildings were built from 1978 and belonged to the Hung Kuo Group. They were planned as a holiday resort on the northern coast, near the adjacent Tamsui district . They were to be sold to officers in the U.S. Forces . The houses were modeled after the Futuro , other houses of this type can still be found in Taiwan.

The project was discontinued in 1980 due to investment losses. The construction company later ran out of money for the work and the houses and apartments could not be marketed as planned.

There were rumors of fatal accidents. Workers allegedly died after a mythological Chinese dragon sculpture Long was destroyed during construction on the access road . Other stories say the site was a former burial site for Dutch soldiers. Allegedly, body parts were discovered during the construction work. Whenever houses were to be demolished, workers are said to have died, so that finally demolition work was no longer carried out and the settlement fell into a ghost town for decades.

Abandoned UFO houses by Sanzhi (2008)

The gondola-like buildings became a sight because of their unusual architecture . They were used by MTV as a film set and were a popular photo opportunity for tourists. In online discussions, they were cited as examples of ghost towns or " ruins from the future". The houses are the theme of a piece on the 2014 LP Abandoned City by the experimental pianist Volker Bertelmann , called Hauschka .

demolition

The buildings were demolished on December 29, 2008, despite an online petition attempting to keep part of it as a museum. After the building was demolished, the plan was to transform the site into a tourist attraction with hotels and beach facilities. The demolition of the buildings was completed in 2010. The site was to become a commercial seaside resort and water park.
