history

ULTRIX-32

At the beginning of 1984, DEC announced the new ULTRIX-32 for the VAX . This version, released in June, was based on 4.2 BSD , but was later expanded to include functions from 4.3BSD and Unix System V Release 2.

From 1986 the ULTRIX-32 Operating System Version 1.2 also supported the new VAX 8650 and the workstation VAXstation II .

ULTRIX-11

The first version of this product was still called V7M-11 V1.0, which was based on UNIX 7th Edition. In 1984 the new version was introduced as ULTRIX-11 V2.0 for the computers of the Micro / PDP11 and PDP-11 series. Version 3.0 followed in 1986.

ULTRIX for RISC

The last version of Ultrix was version 4.5 for DECstation and DECsystem from November 1995.

Functions

Ultrix supported both TCP / IP and DECnet , as well as SMTP and Mail-11 .

Originally, the Ultrix Workstation Software (UWS) desktop environment based on the X Window System was used for the VAXstations under Ultrix-32 . With the spread of X Version 11 (X11), the DECwindows environment was introduced, which was also the basis for the design of the later Motif of the OSF .
