The United States Chess Federation (USCF) is the national chess federation of the United States .

This was founded in 1939 through the merger of the American Chess Federation and the National Chess Federation and, according to its own information, today represents around 2,200 chess clubs and 90,000 members. The state with the most members is Texas (7856), while Wyoming has only 58 players in the USCF. The oldest existing club is the Mechanics' Institute Chess Club in San Francisco (founded in 1855). The traditional Marshall Chess Club in New York should also be mentioned .

The federation is a member of the world chess federation FIDE . His tasks include the organization of the state championships and other tournaments (including correspondence chess ) as well as the youth work. She also publishes the monthly chess magazine Chess life . Since 1960 the USCF has been using the rating system developed by Arpad Elo ( Elo numbers ). It awards national championship titles based on the ratings . In 1984 she founded the US Chess Hall of Fame .

The USCF experienced a large increase in membership from 1972 when Bobby Fischer won the title of world chess champion. In 2002, however, Fischer was expelled from the organization because of his anti-American statements.

The current president is Allen Priest.
