The USS Grayling (SS-18) was a submarine of the class D in the service of the United States Navy .

history

The Grayling was launched on June 16, 1909 at the Fore River Shipyard , which had built the boat as a subcontractor for Electric Boat . The boat entered service on November 23 of that year and renamed the D-2 two years later .

The D-2 was the flagship of Submarine Division 3 in the Atlantic and took part in shooting and diving exercises. She took part in the Presidential Review of the Fleet held from May 5 to 18, 1915 .

During the First World War , the D-2 was a test platform in New London , Connecticut . On September 14, 1917, she sank in the harbor; everyone on board was rescued.

On September 9, 1919, the boat was finally assigned to the reserve fleet in the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard , decommissioned on January 18, 1922 and sold in September of that year to be dismantled.
