The USS Doris Miller (CVN 81) is a scheduled aircraft carrier for the United States Navy and the fourth unit in the Gerald R. Ford- class .
Naming
On January 20, 2020, incumbent Secretary of the Navy Thomas B. Modly announced during a Martin Luther King Day celebration in Pearl Harbor that the CVN-81 would be named USS Doris Miller. Doris Miller (1919–1943) was celebrated as a hero in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 and was personally awarded the Navy Cross by Admiral Chester W. Nimitz . For the first time, an aircraft carrier is named after an African-American. So far, the bearers of the US Navy have carried names of famous battles, military leaders or US presidents.
