Theodor Balzer

Theodor Balzer (born September 2, 1874 in Schmallenberg ; † June 23, 1944 in Düsseldorf ) was a German architect .

Life

Theodor Balzer was born in Schmallenberg at Weststrasse 11 in September 1874 as the first of eight children. His father Josef Balzer (1840-1892), called Preins, was, like his ancestor Balzer, this called Blessing, a blacksmith by profession . His mother Maria Catherina (* 1845) was born Schulte.

The young architect's first construction activities in Düsseldorf coincided with the completion of the first Oberkassel bridge , which opened on November 12, 1898. The Rheinische Bahngesellschaft had bought land and sold it for development, so that construction activity was brisk. From 1899, Balzer built a neo-renaissance house on Kaiser-Wilhelm-Ring and on Karolinger Strasse (today Wildenbruchstrasse) in Düsseldorf-Oberkassel . At that time, his office was in downtown Düsseldorf on Oststrasse, from where he soon moved to Hohenzollernstrasse 39.

In 1904 Balzer married the textile manufacturer's daughter Frieda Didam (1875–1956) from Schmallenberg and they moved to Cheruskerstraße 74. At that time, the so-called “Brückenschlösschen” was built on Kaiser-Friedrich-Ring 1, which still closes the entrance today with the striking corner tower Oberkassel marked. After completion around 1906, he moved into the part of the building at Kaiser-Friedrich-Ring 1a himself with his architectural office. The "Brückenschlösschen" soon became an excursion destination for city dwellers looking for relaxation and from 1910 to 1918 a restaurant of the same name was operated there. When the mayor's office of Heerdt was incorporated into Düsseldorf under Mayor Nikolaus Knopp in 1909, Theodor Balzer had a seat on the local council.

At the beginning of 1910, as a member of the Association of German Architects , Balzer worked as a sworn expert for the construction company "Baßler & Gormanns", Tussmannstrasse 66 in Düsseldorf. In the 1920s as a court-appointed expert for building matters in the city. As a member of the Düsseldorf Architects and Engineers Association , Balzer took part in the 1912 competition for the development of Essener Straße, a small apartment complex with 30 houses, and received commissions from Hermann Goerke , Fritz Hofmeister , Moritz Korn , Carl Krieger , Verheyen and Stobbe and Eduard Lyonel Wehner .

Travels took Balzer to Italy to experience Italian sculpture and architecture in Milan, Genoa and Rome. As a friend of the fine arts, Balzer sought proximity to well-known artists of his time and joined the Malkasten artists' association . The Oberkassel sculptor Heinz Müller , whose "goose girl" was placed on the small apartment complex in Essener Strasse, created a bronze bust of him.

In the Oberkassel conservation statutes of 2015, some design features of Balzer's smaller townhouses are described: “The first nine houses on the Rhine front north of Luegallee on Kaiser-Friedrich-Ring were designed between 1903 and 1905 by Theodor Balzer and Hermann vom Endt , among others . The houses are lower than on the southern front of the Rhine and have architectural elements that appear more small-town, such as protruding gables, ornamental frameworks or wooden söller / balcony . ”The writer Martin Richard Möbius (1892 - around 1952), who also published on architecture (including in of the series Neue Werkkunst ), described Theodor Balzer as a building artist whose architectural works are characterized in a special way by individuality, functionality and harmony of forms. “Villas and residential buildings, commercial buildings and factories, administration buildings and schools, churches and train stations, no type of modern architecture where Balzer would not have been successful as a designer or executor,” says Möbius. Theodor Balzer was one of the most important architects for the Oberkassel district. However, he did not only work in the left-bank part of Düsseldorf, but always remained loyal to his homeland, the Sauerland .
