The USS Leftwich (DD-984) was a destroyer of the Spruance-class destroyer .

history

The Leftwich's keel was laid on November 12, 1976 at Ingalls Shipbuilding . The destroyer was launched in 1978 and entered service with the United States Navy in 1979 .

On November 29, 1982, the Leftwich collided with the emerging submarine USS Thomas A. Edison (SSBN-610) during a training exercise near United States Naval Base Subic Bay . Both ships were damaged while the Leftwich was being repaired, the Edison was decommissioned unrepaired two months later.

From 1985 the Leftwich was stationed in Pearl Harbor , which remained her home port for the rest of her service life.

During the Iran-Iraq war she served in the Persian Gulf, and in Operation Nimble Archer , she shot at in retaliation for Iranian attacks on tanker oil platforms in the Gulf. She was later involved in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm , during which she attacked Iraq with cruise missiles . In addition, the Leftwich later helped enforce the embargoes on Iraq by participating in searches of cargo ships. Leftwich moved a total of eight times during their service. In March 1998 the destroyer was decommissioned and sunk on August 1, 2003 in the Pacific (coordinate 22 ° 48 '46 "N, 160 ° 33' 59" W) as a target ship.
