The USS Truckee (AO-147) (from 1980: USNS Truckee (T-AO-147) ) was a Neosho-class supply tanker of the United States Navy that entered service in November 1955. In its 36 years of service, the ship was involved in missions during the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Second Gulf War . The Truckee ended her active service in October 1991 and was then in the reserve fleet . In 2008, the more than fifty-year-old ship was scrapped.
history
The Truckee was laid down at New York Shipbuilding on December 21, 1953 and launched on March 10, 1955. The commissioning took place on November 18, 1955 under the command of Captain Joseph W. Leverton.
Until 1980 the ship belonged to Service Squadron 4. In addition to various trips to Europe, the Truckee also served as a supplier during the Cuban Missile Crisis in October 1962 and was also the flagship of Service Squadron 4 there. In 1963, the ship received the Battle Effectiveness Award for this mission.
During the Six Day War in June 1967, the Truckee was used as a supply tanker for the aircraft carrier USS America (CV-66) . The ship then took part in NATO exercises in November 1967 . The Truckee received another award from the Meritorious Unit Commendation for its work during the Jordanian Civil War . The ship experienced other active missions during the Yom Kippur War and the Second Gulf War.
From 1980, the Truckee received a civilian ship crew and from then on bore the name prefix USNS . Their previous armament was also removed. However, nothing changed in the area of operation of the ship until it was decommissioned on October 21, 1991.
After decommissioning, the Truckee was in the reserve fleet in James River . On July 18, 1997, the ship was removed from the Naval Vessel Register and, after a further eleven years, sold to Bay Bridge Enterprises for scrapping in August 2008.
