The United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) is a military academy of the United States in Kings Point in the State of New York . It is administered by the United States Maritime Administration of the United States Department of Transportation . As one of the five service academies in the United States, the USMMA is used for officer training . When starting their training, the midshipmen undertake either to work in the US naval industry for five years after their studies and to be available for eight years for the reserve of a branch of the US armed forces, usually the United States Navy Reserve , or five years to serve actively in a United States armed forces.

In contrast to the other service academies in the USA ( USMA , USNA , USAFA and USCGA ), the USMMA is not subordinate to the armed forces of the United States and is therefore not directly part of the military. Despite this special position among the military academies, the USMMA is the only service academy that was awarded a troop flag in honor of the fallen midshipmen in World War II . The founding idea of the academy was to strengthen the US merchant navy to ensure a reliable flow of supplies in times of war . Franklin D. Roosevelt drew the comparison at the inauguration of the academy in 1943: "The academy serves the merchant navy, as West Point serves the army and Annapolis the navy ". In the past, the advisability of a special state academy for officer training in the merchant navy was discussed several times. The academy was dubbed, among other things, an educational institution from a bygone era, in which the USA is no longer today.

The courses offered by the USMMA mainly include marine-related engineering, such as marine engineering and shipyard management.
