Ubi suite

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The ubi-Suite was a software solution for managing cell phones or compact portable computers such as PDAs , with which companies can set up and manage a large number of such devices over the cellular network ( mobile device management ). According to Berlecon Research and Fraunhofer ESK, the software was one of the most important device management solutions on the market. The software was developed and sold by the software manufacturer ubitexx based in Munich. The company was awarded the German Internet Prize in 2008 . On May 2, 2011, the manufacturer ubitexx was taken over by the Canadian company Research In Motion . With the ubi-Suite product , Research In Motion founded the new development of its "Multi-Platform BlackBerry Enterprise Solution for Smartphones and Tablets" in June 2011.

functionality

The ubi-Suite is a so-called software suite, i.e. a package made up of several software modules. The solution consists of client software installed on the company's managed mobile devices and centralized management software that allows a company administrator to manage and control all of these devices over cellular networks.

The solution supports the typical work of IT employees in medium-sized and large companies with the management and inventory of corporate cell phones and their software, software distribution , support in the event of a fault (if the device does not work or does not work correctly) and the blocking of unsafe functions of the device (such as cameras that are not allowed on company premises or WLAN and Bluetooth connection options that allow malware to attack a company network ). Since the devices in question are typically not located locally in the company, but are in the field with their employees (e.g. field service, sales, etc.), without a mobile device management solution it is very time-consuming to integrate the devices into the To bring the support department and have them wait there individually.

Version 3.6 of the product supports mobile devices based on Windows Mobile , iPhone OS , Symbian OS , Android and Blackberry devices.

distribution

The solution is a typical B2B product, i.e. a product for companies, not for private end customers. The solution is used by 175 authorities and companies from all industries. Including medium-sized and large companies. Approximately 25,000 licenses (on corporate mobile devices managed with them) are in use. From 2009 the solution will also be increasingly marketed in the USA and other European countries (according to manufacturer information, as of 11/2008).

advantages

  • Reduction of the effort for the administration and inventory of large numbers of mobile phones used in the company.
  • Increased reliability and availability of the managed devices compared to conventional manual IT support.
  • The company agreements and regulations for the use of company-owned devices that are typical in companies can be "enforced" by configuring the devices. It is not only trusted that the employees / users adhere to these regulations in a "disciplined" manner. For example, the ban on downloading and installing programs from the Internet. For PCs and laptops, these restrictions are taken for granted.
  • The settings cannot be "bypassed" or overridden by the user.

disadvantage

  • For smaller companies with few mobile devices, such a solution does not offer the cost advantage ( ROI ) as it does for medium-sized or large companies with hundreds or even several thousand mobile devices in use.
  • Employees / users may find the enforced, restrictive enforcement of company rules and security regulations to restrict the functionality of the devices to be negative.
