Ugra-Karma is the second studio album by the Finnish extreme metal band Impaled Nazarene .

Emergence

Mika Luttinen had 1,992 of interest in Hare Krishna bought a book that some translations at the end Finnish - Sanskrit contained. These formed the basis for the lyrics on the album, some of which were in Sanskrit. The recordings took place in July 1993 in the Tico-Tico-Studio in Kemi , Finland . The music and lyrics come from the brothers Kimmo and Mika Luttinen. During the studio stay , the pieces from the EP Satanic Masowhore were recorded, which was released on December 1, 1993 at the same time as the album.

On the cover of the book was a painting by a painter named Madame Koslovsky, which depicts Parvati , the wife of the god Shiva , riding a tiger . The band decided to use this painting as a record cover . In 1997, the record label and the band were then due to copyright infringement sued and had about 100,000 US dollars pay. The pressings from the re-release in January 1999 (with the EP Satanic Masowhore as a bonus) are provided with a different cover.

Music style and lyrics

Kai Wendel from Rock Hard points out in his contemporary review that the band is being moved closer to bands like Mayhem and Burzum because of the symbolism they use . However, the band differentiated itself from contemporary Black Metal and saw it as a trend. The music style is still aggressive, the chaotic style of the previous works "has now given way to clearer, more sophisticated song structures". The songs are “longer and much more catchy. Impaled Nazarenes Sound has clearly gained in melody on 'Ugra-Karma' and now sounds 'more metallic', as the rugged punk and grindcore chords have been replaced by real riffs in many places . ”With the occasional use of keyboards, the band creates“ a surreal , mystical one Atmosphere that may seem a bit disturbing when you first hear it ”. Lyrically, the album is "a crude gibberish from Hindu mythology, primitive devil worship and all sorts of perversions that are voiced in English, German, Finnish and even Sanskrit (!)". In particular, the piece God is dead , whose text consists of just a few lines of text such as “God is dead”, “Judean God is dead” and “Heil! Salvation! Salvation! Heil! ”, Fueled rumors that the band represented right-wing ideas. The text was translated into German by Sylvia Fürst, a friend of Luttinen, who was part of the editorial team of the controversial A-Blaze . Luttinen explained in the documentation 666 - At Calling Death that the song was not National Socialist, but a statement against Israel and its dealings with the Palestinians, although he did not come up with the name. However, the text contains no references to Israel and its politics.

reception

Kai Wendel from Rock Hard wrote about the music on the album : "Simple, mostly straightforward and uncompromising, punk riffs [...] determine the songs as well as fast drums and create their charm and originality." Herjulf vom Vönger - Webzine sees in the the keyboards created a “surreal, mystical atmosphere” “the attempt to create a kind of post-apocalyptic, eschatological mood, as it occurs especially towards the end of 'Kali-Yuga' and 'Hate'. Unfortunately, this idea was not carried through consistently, because pieces like 'Gott ist tot' or 'Coraxo' leave the impression of a fun project rather than a band with a serious concept. The lyrical effusions, on the other hand, can be described as entirely original and exotic. "

  4. a b "[W] e don't see our band as a Black Metal band because nowadays the Black Metal is huge trend. So, uh, we call our music Suomi Perkele… Suomi Finland Perkele Metal which is like this kind of much more hate. In our first LP the lyrics were much more oriented like Black Metal stuff, but on the second LP there is more stuff like Buddhism, there is this kind of, for example there is track called Gott ist tot which the lyrics are in German, and it's not a nazi song, but it's this kind of my own statement of the Israel politics because they are really like fucking up the… these… what the hell they are called, I don't remember, but those who are livin 'there, they are fucking the things up; so it's like, you see it always on the TV, these people are being killed and stuff, and nobody doesn't do anything. So, it's good to make a song then; make your own statement. That's what I have always been thinking, that if you are in a band, you want to make a statement. When you do lyrics, that you say something. ”Documentation 666 - At Calling Death .
