The Ukai Dam, which dams the Tapti River, forms the largest reservoir in Gujarat . It is also known as Vallabh Sagar Sarovar. It was built in 1971 for irrigation , electricity generation and flood protection . The catchment area is around 62,255 km 2 and the water surface is around 520 km 2 . The dam is 94 km from the city of Surat .
The storage capacity of the Ukai Dam is almost 46% of the total capacity of all the other existing dams in Gujarat combined.
