Ullrich Wannhoff (* 1952 in Aue ) is a German painter and graphic artist.

Life

Wannhoff was a stoker in the GDR for 18 years and worked as a machinist in a converter station at the TU Dresden . This niche allowed him to stay away from socialist activities until one of the lecturers noticed him and made him the offer to become artistic director at the TU Dresden. This activity lasted from 1981 to 1984, when the circle was banned. He has been making long-term trips to the arctic regions of North America and Russia since 1991 . These experiences were reflected in paintings , drawings, collages and photographs. Wannhoff lives in Berlin .

On the occasion of Alexander von Humboldt's 150th anniversary of his death in 2009, the Frankfurt Book Fair dedicated a book collection to current expeditions and naturalists. The title “The long way to the Far East - search for traces on Kamchatka” was chosen by Wannhoff for this purpose.

In addition to the expressive representation, the structure and color of the works are based on the great masters of Expressionism. Its colors are strong and rich in contrast, sometimes violent. The figures are constructions and creatures, reflections in harmony between man and nature with an impressively suggestive effect on the viewer, from whom one can hardly escape.

Ullrich Wannhoff's artistic work is the expression of a diverse network of different areas of knowledge (ethnology, ornithology, history of discovery and art), which are mostly implemented in the form of collages. Wannhoff often sits between the chairs within the respective departments, since in today's Germany the applied multidisciplinarity practiced by a single person is still largely awaiting recognition. Wannhoff's works contain an abundance of narrative accessories, which are incorporated into the picture as scraps of paper representing thoughts, but with a strong painterly coating ensures the unity of the picture. Only in the details, with careful inspection, does the versatility of his thinking become apparent.
