Ulrich Müller (chemist)
Ulrich Müller (born July 6, 1940 in Bogotá , Colombia ) is a German chemist who gained fame through his work on solid-state chemistry , inorganic chemistry and complex chemistry . He is also the author of several textbooks.
Life
Müller studied chemistry from 1959 to 1963 at the Technical University of Stuttgart (today University of Stuttgart). He completed his dissertation at Purdue University , West Lafayette, Indiana, USA, and at the Technical University of Stuttgart. The doctorate took place in 1966 in Stuttgart with Kurt Dehnicke in inorganic chemistry . This was followed by positions as a scientific assistant at the Institute for Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Karlsruhe with Hartmut Bärnighausen from 1967 to 1970 and at the Institute for Inorganic Chemistry at the Philipps University of Marburg . In 1972 he qualified as a professor for inorganic chemistry in Marburg and was then Professor of Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Marburg from 1972 to 1975. From 1975 to 1977 he was a visiting professor at the University of Costa Rica . This was followed by further professorships for inorganic chemistry at the University of Marburg (1977 to 1992), at the University of Kassel (1992 to 1999) and at the University of Marburg (2000 to 2005) until his retirement in 2005.
He wrote several textbooks on chemistry, including the German edition of the Introduction to Chemistry by Charles E. Mortimer (which was continued in German long after the last English edition).
Research areas
- Application of crystallographic group theory in crystal chemistry to determine structural relationships in crystalline solids and to predict possible structure types for inorganic compounds.
- Synthesis of thio , polysulfido and polyselenido complexes and related compounds of main and subgroups , both in solution and by solid-state chemical methods
- Structure analysis of crystalline solids by means of X-ray diffraction . This also includes the structure elucidation of one-dimensional disordered crystals by evaluating the diffuse X-ray scattering, including the development of the associated evaluation methods.
