Ulrich Mense

Ulrich Mense (born January 29, 1927 in Rostock ; † February 14, 2003 in Rostock) was a German sailor who competed for the German Democratic Republic .

The trained machine fitter did his sport for the SC Empor Rostock . From 1957 he sailed in the kite boat class with helmsman Peter Ahrendt , from 1959 Wilfried Lorenz was the third man in the boat. This crew won five GDR championship titles with the yacht Mutafo from 1960 to 1963 and in 1965. In 1960 and 1962 the crew won the Ostseewoche off Warnemünde. The dragon crew Ahrendt, Lorenz and Mense qualified for the all-German team at the 1964 Olympic Games in Enoshima . At the Olympic regatta, the Danes Ole Berntsen , Christian von Bülow and Ole Poulsen won 28 points ahead of the Mutafo crew, 303 points behind the US crew received the bronze medal.

After his active sporting career, Mense worked as an honorary board member at SC Empor. In his main occupation, the engineering economist was responsible for equipping the deep-sea fleet as a division manager in the fish combine.
