Ulrich Saint-Paul (born December 17, 1948 in Elmshorn ) is a German biologist , professor of pure and applied marine ecology at the University of Bremen . He worked at the Leibniz Center for Tropical Marine Research (ZMT), Bremen , of which he was deputy director until the end of 2010. He headed the Mangrove Ecology working group at the ZMT. He also worked as a consultant for the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ). He also worked as a consultant in Indonesia, Malawi and Tanzania for the organization Senior Expert Service (SES), Bonn. He has been retired since April 2014.

biography

Saint-Paul received his diploma in biology from the University of Hamburg in 1976 with a focus on hydrobiology and fishery sciences. In 1982 he received his doctorate there in these areas. In 1989 he completed his habilitation and in 1993 he became a professor at the University of Bremen . From 1976 to 1980 he worked at the Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazônia (INPA) in Manaus , Brazil. From 1980 to 1988 he was a university assistant at the Institute for Hydrobiology and Fisheries Science at the University of Hamburg . And then until 1992 he worked for the AG for Tropical Ecology of the Max Planck Institute for Limnology at the INPA in Manaus.

The focus of his work is the ecology of floodplains and in particular mangrove ecology with a focus on northern Brazil . He also works in the Philippines , Vietnam , India and Indonesia . Since 1995 he has been coordinating the long-term project for research into mangroves in northern Brazil, entitled "MADAM - Mangrove Dynamics and Management".
