Ulrich Schmidt (automotive technician)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ulrich Schmidt (born November 8, 1902 in Bromberg ; † after 1976) was a German automotive technician.

1929 he discovered at the Technical University of Berlin ,

“That at particularly high speeds (over 6000 revolutions per minute) new laws arise in the engine. The machine then no longer adheres to the textbook rules, according to which the piston sucks in the gaseous gasoline-air mixture like a pump, then compresses it, is thrown downwards by the exploding gas and finally pushes the burned gases out through the exhaust pipe. At 11,000 revolutions per minute ... [the gas] can no longer follow every single movement of the piston. Instead, the raging piston sets the gas in a raging flow from the carburetor through the cylinder into the exhaust. However, this dense, rapid gas flow is constantly briefly interrupted by the valves that open and close the cylinder chamber. The gas flow begins to oscillate in itself under high pressures. "

In 1932 he wrote his dissertation on the exhaust noise of internal combustion engines . On December 18, 1932, he registered the patent silencer for the exhaust of internal combustion engines , which is still very popular in the 21st century. Gabriel Becker's assistant Alfred Kauffmann was dismissed in May 1933. Around 1938 he researched gasoline injection with Walter Froede .

From October 5, 1943 to 1945 he was a lecturer in automotive metrology in the field of heat and power management at Faculty III for mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Berlin. After Georg Beck had an accident on a business trip on November 4, 1943, Ulrich Schmidt also became the acting head of the institute.

From 1949 he was head of the technical commission of the Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA). In 1951 he took on a teaching position for motor vehicle engineering at the Technical University of Darmstadt , which was followed by his appointment as associate professor in 1953.
