Ulrike Koch

Ulrike Koch (* 1950 in Birkenfeld (Nahe) ) is a German sinologist and filmmaker .

Life

Koch studied Sinology, Japanology and Ethnology at the University of Zurich and Chinese literature and philosophy at the Beijing University.

At the beginning of her film career she worked as a location scout and casting director for Bernardo Bertolucci's feature films The Last Emperor (1987) and Little Buddha (1993). She also worked as casting director for Nikita Mikhalkov's feature film Urga (1991). In Ulrike Ottinger's feature film Johanna d'Arc of Mongolia (1988/1989) she also received the Assistant director . Her first documentary, Qi-Gong in China - The Art of Silence as the Elixir of Life, she made between 1994 and 1996. Up until 2011, further ethnographic documentaries were made that are shaped by their academic background. The Swiss cameraman Pio Corradi worked on the documentary Die Salzmänner von Tibet (1997), which was made under extreme conditions and with improvised equipment .

Ulrike Koch lives and works as a freelance film writer in Zollikon near Zurich. Since 2018, her papers have been in the documentation center in Zurich, the Swiss-German location of the Swiss film archive .
